Measuring ourselves

We are currently learning to estimate and measure lengths accurately using mm, cm and m. As part of this, and in conjunction with our current ME study, the students worked in pairs to measure parts of their bodies. This proved interesting when they had to measure body parts such as heads, necks and smiles where a ruler alone would not be useful. Students decided that the best way to take these measurements was to use string (wool) cut to the appropriate length and then measured along a ruler. Check out the great partner work below.
Please note - no necks were hurt in this activity!

Blake measures Max's neck while Mac checks Toby's head measurement.

Mac measures his smile while Jessica helps Rubie to measure hers.

Connie very carefully measures Abby's neck while Jenaya is super-careful not to cut Rylee's mouth as she measures her smile.

The two Lucy's work together to calculate their ear-to-ear measurements while George gets William to hold the wool in the right place for his neck measurement.

One of the most interesting discoveries that we made is that the measurement of our outstretched arms (finger tip to finger tip) is almost the same as our height measurement.
