Last night we celebrated the success of all of the students of Lawrence Area School with our prize-giving evening.

Congratulations to Archie - Academic Prize for Year 3 2016
Congratulations to Grace - Evan's bequest for Diligence Year 3 2016
Congratulations to Caitlyn - Academic Prize for Year 4 2016
Congratulations to Luca - Evan's Bequest for Diligence for Year 4 2016
Congratulations to Madison - Citizenship award for Year 3 & 4 2016

This year has been a wonderful year in Room 4. Each and every learner has given me cause to be very proud throughout the year. Students have worked extremely hard to meet their goals, whether they have been academic, sporting or social. The growth and progress that I have been able to watch over the course of the year has been truly heart-warming. All of the children in Room 4 are wonderfully diligent and hard-working. It was lovely to see this recognised for each individual learner last week at our special whole school assembly where they received their certificates for 2016.
It has been a privilege to be a part of the learning that has occurred in Room 4 this year. I wish the Year 4 students all the very best for 2017 and I know that they will love being in Room 7.
I can not wait to be a part of the the further growth and success of the Year 3 students as they step up to become the leaders and role models in Room 4 next year. Becoming a year 4 is a true chance to blossom and grow.
I thank the parents for their support over the past year (or 2 years), this makes my job so much easier.
I hope you all enjoy a well-earned break and I look forward to seeing you back at school in February.
Happy holidays to you all!! :-) Mrs May

Joss House relocation

This morning we went up to Maryport Street to see the Joss House being moved from it’s section back to the Chinese Camp.

The house was built in 1869, and it was a very central part of the Chinese camp. It was used for meetings, it was a spiritual building as it had a chapel. At the end of the gold rush, when there were only a few miners left it was used to treat the terminally ill patients of the camp. There was a fire at the camp, and some of the Joss house was burned, but they replaced it, as it was such an important building on the camp site.

It was shifted to Maryport street in 1947. The Joss house has been an historic building with Lawrence, and today was a very important day in it’s history. We were lucky enough to be able to watch the building being shifted off the site and leaving for its new, but old, home back at the Chinese camp.

Caitlyn's sandpit volcano

Today for her "How to..." morning talk Caitlyn showed us how to make a volcano in the sandpit.
She started with a drink bottle 3/4 filled with warm water.
Then she added a squirt of dish liquid into it.
Then she added two teaspoons of baking soda.
Then she added pink food colouring to 1 cup of white vinegar.
The final step was to pour this mixture into the drink bottle.
It was a really cool morning talk.

Symmetrical bugs art for Maths

We have been studying geometry in Maths, so we decided to make some brightly coloured symmetrical bugs.
We began by drawing one side of our bug with pencil.
Then we had to draw over the top of the pencil with black pastel. We had to press hard to make it thick.
When that weas done we folded the paper in half and pressed down carefully with our hand. We had to rub the pastel onto the other side of the paper.
This created the symmetrical other side of our bug.
Then we had to go over the faint outline of pastel with the black pastel again to create a nice dark black outline for our symmetrical bug.
Once we had done that it was time to add colour to our bugs using brightly coloured pastels.
We had to be sure to use symmetrical patterns and colours too, which took lots of concentration.
When we were finished colouring our bug we use dye to fill in the back ground.
We tried to use a colour dye that we hadn't used in our bug.

We had so much fun creating this art work. We hope you really like them

Room 4 Create a vegetable garden

Room 4 have been studying "Growing Good Food"
At the start of the term we planted seeds in our classroom and we have been watering them, putting them in the sun and watching them grow ever since.
Today, we decided that they were getting too big and that it was time for them to be planted in a garden outside.
Before we could plant our vegetables we have to make a garden.
There was a big pile of top soil, so we got the shovels and the wheel barrows and we started digging.
It was hard work, and it was hot outside in the sun, but with lots of us working together we soon had our garden sorted.

We filled up an old tractor tyre for the garden.

Once the garden was filled with top soil and compost it was time to plant the vegetables.
Our garden has carrots, lettuces, radishes, and broccoli.

We also planted some tomato plants in some small tyres near the fence so that they could grow up the fence.
We are really proud of our garden, and we hope that it "GROWS GOOD FOOD!"
(Some of us were away getting the water to water our plants when this photo was taken.)

SADD - Dress your door competition

This year's theme for the 'Dress you door competition' was "Don't be a distracted driver."
Room 4 brainstormed all of the things that can be a distraction to drivers and then we coloured pictures to add to a mural on our door.
We didn't win, but we were really proud of our finished door.
