Magic balloons Science Experiment

Today we did a really fun science experiment. This is Archie's observations of the lesson.
"I saw the vinegar and baking soda fizzing up and all of the air went up into the balloon. I think this happened because the baking soda comes into the bottle and causes the vinegar and baking soda to fizz. That cause all of the air to go into the balloon." - Archie

The vinegar and the baking soda mixed together causes a chemical reaction and this is when the fizzing begins. The bubbles race to the top of the bottle where they pop, releasing air. All of this air then escapes out of the bottle, where it was caught by the balloon. Putting the balloon on top of the bottle is a good way to show that gas is being released from the bubbles, because we can't see the gas. We can only hear the bubbles popping, which is what makes the fizzing sound. There was a enough gas to keep the balloon up over night.

We took this slow motion video of the experiment so that we could see what was actually happening, because it all happened really quickly. When we watched the video it helped us to understand the science that was happening.

Student of the week - Archie

This term we have been studying the Olympic games and we have been researching an Olympic athlete, as well as researching more about the games. Archie has done an exceptional job of searching out information to include in his work. He has been very thorough, but he has also been quite selective. It is great to see these independent skills being developed and role modeled in our class. Great work Archie!

It is always very pleasing to see student making terrific progress in reading and this week it has been Ava who has made great gains. Well done Ava, it shows that you have been working really hard, both at school and at home. Keep up the great work!
