Student of the week - Lucy

Congratulations to Lucy for being chosen as student of the week for the second time!  Lucy impressed both Mrs May and Mrs O with her attitude on camp - the way that she tackled every challenge on camp with confidence and enthusiasm.  You were a great role model to others on camp Lucy!

Room 4's Awesome Camp - Moana Pool

Yet another FABULOUS 'motion' activity for camp - Moana Pool was a sure hit:
up, down, up, down....hydrosliding

round and round... the river in the main pool
up .... and... DOWN with a splash from the small diving board
not to mention the brave few who went off the high diving board
and just FUN, FUN, FUN!

Room 4's Awesome Camp - Mosgiel Park

After we had been to Moana Pool and running up and down to the top of the hydro slide we were absolutely ravenous!!!  Luckily there was lots of bread and hot chips waiting for us at the Mosgiel Park and we were able to make some yummy hot chip sandwiches, smothered in tomato sauce.  Special thanks to Phil who bought us all a bottle of fizz to have with our lunch.  After eating, we still had some time to play before packing up for the final time and heading home.  What a way to finish camp!

Room 4's Awesome Camp - St Kilda Dinosaur Park

There was loads of fun to be had at the St Kilda Dinosaur Park on Friday morning.  Most of us were too busy scootering to enjoy what the playground had to offer.  After a free exploration of the jumps and track, we finished with a competitive scooter race, which was won by Max.

Room 4's Awesome Camp - Museum Exploration

Before leaving the museum on Friday morning we had a quick quiz in groups and a short amount of time to explore what else the museum had on display.  We certainly could have spent more time here but we had more activities to squeeze in before home time.

Room 4's Awesome Camp - Butterfly House

Friday morning after packing up our beds and personal gear, we were taken to the tropical butterfly house at the museum.  It was an awesome time to visit as we were the only ones in there.  Some of us loved the butterflies, whilst others were intrigued by the baby quails, the turtles, the gecko or the tarantulas.

Check out the butterfly that Josie spotted, hiding amongst the foliage. It was very well camoflaged.

Room 4's Awesome Camp - Sleeping in Discovery World

DON'T BE FOOLED BY THESE ANGELIC FACES!!!!!!
After finding a suitable sleeping spot in Discovery World (not on top of or underneath anything), the students all snuggled down ready for sleep time.  OR NOT!!!

6.20am was WAY TOO EARLY to be ready for action on Friday!

Room 4's Awesome Camp - Night Walk

The Night Walk will undoubtedly be one of the strongest camp memories for Room 4 students.  This involved following Ashleigh with her torch in the pitch black, in one L-O-N-G line, hands on the next person's shoulders, tip toeing up to the animal attic.  We had to be super-quiet so as not to set off the museum sensor alarms.  Once up in the animal attic Ashleigh began reading us a story about the animals escaping from the museum when..... from out of nowhere came REALLY loud animal noises.  The response from the Room 4 students was unforgettable!!!!!

Room 4's Awesome Camp - Egyptian Mummy and Death Masks

Our night time activity related to the Egyptian mummification process.  Special thanks to 'Sug' for volunteering to be our body to be mummified.  It was fascinating to learn about how and why the Egyptians went about this process.  Room 4 were rather 'grossed out' to learn that the dead person's brain was pulled out through their nose during this process!!!!!
Room 4 students had HEAPS of questions for Hannah and Ashleigh from the museum about the mummy in the museum.  We were surprised to learn that she died from a tooth abcess!  Not cancer, heart attack or a car accident as some of us guessed.
We then all created our own 'death masks'.  These were painted and decorated in a real variety of ways.  In ancient Egyptian times these were made to represent the features of the dead person, but luckily we didn't have to consider that as we had fun painting our own masks.

Room 4's Awesome Camp - Discovery World

During our stay at the museum we spent quite a bit of time in Discovery World.  As the name suggests there was so much to discover!  We soon found out that every activity was related to friction and many used magnetism or the push/pull force to work.

We even discovered some new and inventive ways of using Discovery World activities.  For example, the quick 'blow wave' as seen in the above pictures.
An interesting challenge was 'The Stroop Effect' shown on the wall above.  Can you say the colour, not the word?
Everybody had different favourites which they re-visited again and again.

Lots and lots of experimenting taking place.

It wasn't only the children who were up for a challenge either!  Phil and Danny were keen to try and solve the mystery of the brain challenge - did the end of the table you were sitting at affect the results?  Did the headband choice affect the results?

Room 4's Awesome Camp - Sports Hall of Fame

Our next stop was the NZ Sports Hall of Fame, situated above the railway station.  It's amazing what is kept in there!  Sports memorabilia from many different sporting codes - cricket, athletics, hockey, swimming, cycling, boxing, shearing, golf..... and many more!
After a quick look around we were put into groups of two, with an adult helper, and set off on a hunt to answer quiz questions.
Congratulations to Max, Alesana and Tavi who got the most questions correct.

The last challenge was to see who could ride this bike at the fastest speed.  Well done to Kate who managed to get it up to 24km/hr.  It certainly looked a lot easier than it actually was to pedal!

Even a few had a go!

Room 4's Awesome Camp - Scooter Park

Before we went into the Sports Hall of Fame at the Railway station we had our lunch at the scooter park across the railway lines. It was awesome fun. It was a terrific chance to test our skills on our scooters.
 We played on ramps...
 ...and tried jumps...
 ...and it was really cool.
Samara didn't have her helmet, but as you can see she managed to make her own fun anyway.
Max really tested his skills on the jumps, trying to catch as much air as he possibly could, and we all enjoyed this fantastic display before we left.
