Pet Day

 On Tuesday we held our Lawrence Area School Pet Day. It was a fantastic day to show case our pets, and we all loved the opportunity to show our friends and teachers our most treasured pet.

In Room 4 we had all prepared a project about our pet at home. We had written all about our pet's personality and what we do to look after our pet. We all did a spectacular job of our projects and our teacher's were very impressed.

We also had the opportunity to create a veggie pet at home if we wanted to, and those who did had them displayed at pet day for everyone to admire. Mr Auld picked out Toby's as being the best creation from room 4. Unfortunately we didn't get a photo of all of the creations, but here are the one's we did get pictures of...

On pet day I took my little sister and she was a lady bird. I could hear dogs barking, two cats relaxing in the sun and one goat eating things off vegetable pets as people were taking them home. Kylie was showing us what her horse could do. It was boring. My sister was not in a good mood. - Blake

 Mr Auld also selected two projects from Room 4 that he thought had been exceptionally well done. They were Lucy Wickcliffe's project and Connies project. This is a picture of Connie's fabulous poster about her lamb Monty.

 Kylie Lyders started Pet day off with a dressage demonstration which was very impressive and had all of the horse enthusiasts enthralled. Thanks Kylie it was AWESOME!!!

On pet day I forgot it was pet day and I left my pet rock at home. Then I found a rock so I picked it up and it was just before pet day so I was lucky and I called it Steve. At the end of pet day everyone got a certificate for being at pet day. - Kurt

I walk passed people with cats, dogs and lambs. I've brung my dog. His breed is a basset hound. He's ten and a half, but I don't know how many dog years that is. He's dressed up as a beach dog. We could get one of my shirts on him but the hat on his head would cover his eyes and my sun glasses would slip off his little face, but at least he had a good time. And i did as well. If it wasn't for him I wouldn't have got a certificate. Know matter how old and smelly he is I still love him the way he is. - George

Dogs barking, cats meowing, lambs bleating, a calf is mooing and a horse id neighing. Pet day is very noisy. If you look around you will see mothers yanking leads, pets, cages, trucks, horse floats, teddy's and so much more. When you touch the pets you will feel fluffy manky coats, soft silky coats, fuzzy warm coats and puffy woolly coats. Pet day is exciting and tiring, especially if you have had swim club just the night before. - Rylee

When I got my pet dog I was so excited because I really wanted it to be there. It was the best pet day ever. But when the other dogs and cats and goats got there it was so loud and there were lots of animals there. There were small animals and big animals and I saw Kylie Lyders' horse. - Lucy S

As Neil my goat hops off the back of the truck he goes hopping, skipping, running, jumping and butting. He didn't know what to do first. Neil ran over to the grass, chomped it down and tried to chew on his bandana. "NO Neil! Don't chew your bandana!" - Emma

Student of the Week - Alex

Congratulations to Alex for being our student of the week again.  Alex has been striving to excel in her learning, particularly with mastering ALL of her times tables, including the 12x. 
She has also made huge progress in reading comprehension and always focuses on her writing, ensuring that it is always interesting for the reader.
Well done Alex - your hard work and huge efforts are paying off in your learning successes!

Junior School Athletics Day

 On Friday we held our junior school athletics day with Waitahuna school. We were really lucky to have a warm, sunny day for our sports, so we were able to display our skills and compete to our very best.

It was a terrific opportunity for us to 'strive to excel' and we are sure that having seen all the photos you will agree that we all did that. Everybody put in an amazing effort and we are really proud of how well everyone competed on the day, and the terrific sportsmanship that was displayed!!

Symmetrical bugs

 
For strand Maths we have been learning about creating reflective symmetrical patterns.  We LOVED making these symmetrical bugs using pastel and dye. 
We began by folding a piece of paper in half then opening it back out fully again.  We drew a creative bug design on one half in a dark pastel colour.  Next we folded the paper back in half and pressed firmly with our hands so that the pastel lines were reflected faintly on the other side.  We drew over the faint lines to create a completly symmetrical design.  Our next step was to colour it in symmetrically with pastels and then had to choose a suitable dye colour for the background.
To finish off we framed our own art work, creating a colourful border design.

Narrative beginnings

Over the last few weeks in Room 4 we have been learning to write narratives to entertain the reader.  Today we worked really hard on writing interesting beginnings that hook the reader and make them want to carry on reading.  We experimented by starting with:

• direct speech
• describing the setting
• describing a character
• describing an action
• the problem

Here are a sample of our exciting story beginnings at choosing a new pet...

Annie sprang from the couch and screamed in horror as her mum pulled up the driveway.  Annie's mum had just run over Annie's favourite fluffy, soft, adorable puppy, which was splattered on the ground like a pancake.  "Ahhhhh" Annie screamed.       - Lucy W

Smelly, cute pets everywhere.  "Oh no Mum, why are people crowding around that cage?"   - Lucie C

As Emma glanced around the pet shop she heard cats meowing, birds squawking, dogs barking and so much more.   - Emma

"Mum, Mum, Mum can I please get a fish?  They're totally in right now," begged Becky as they walked by the pet shop.
"OK, just til you can prove you can take care of one" replied Mum.    - Alex

Suddenly a rat bit open the water tank.  Water poured everywhere....  - Rylee

Big, bulky, bossy, smelly and 15.  William really wanted a pet skunk.  He loved them.  - Blake

Cassy and her mum were just running down the street.  Then Cassy suddenly stopped in front of a paddock with a chestnut pony and sign saying 'For Sale'.   - Kate

As Rubie cartwheeled to the pet shop all excited about getting a new pet, she saw a fire... - Rubie

Mr Kurt the pet shop owner hated pets.  No-one knows why.    - Jay

As a house is set on fire, Jake's dog Snuffles was stuck on the roof.  Firemen climbed up the building trying to get the dog but they were too late.    - George

Connie opened the door.  Dogs, cats, monkeys and mice got out of their cages.  Connie screamed.  - Paris

Jay loves pets.  He reads books about pets and watches programmes about pets.   - Hamish

Birds, dogs, mice, stinky smells in the animals litter.  Squeak, squeak the birds squeak.  Mice were scrambling like bubbling hot dogs.  Woof woof, dogs barked in the dark at night in the pet shop.
"This is so cute" people say.  "I love this, I love that."
"Hurry up Emily, choose" said her mum.   - Jessica

Cats meowing, bird's chirping, puppies barking! It's like a pet mania store!  So many to choose from for a little girl.  - Mac

Rggggygggg. The tyres stopped and screeched.  Blake raced to the pet shop.  Cats.  Where are the cats?  "Fluffy, there you are." - William

"Mr Jay, what's your quietest pet?  I'd like that one please Mr Jay."
"Sorry Blake, that one is not for sale kid.  Go home.  And don't come back!"  - Regen

7 year old Emma loved animals.  She really wanted a pet. 
"OK choose a pet" said Mum.
"This one.  So many pets to  choose from" replied Emma.   - Lucy S

All the shelves fell down.  Emily was screaming her lungs out as a rattle snake was surrounding her legs...   - Connie

Alex was a ten year old boy.  He was bossy and growly.   - Venessa

Rubie is now 12 and she is allowed to get a pet.  She has chosen to get a pet pony because she is short for her age but is old enough.  She always reads animal books.   - Abby

A gorilla hits his tummy.  The noise comes out.  Boom, boom, pow.   - Max

My pet pony got lost.  She escaped from her paddock and she never came back.  - Jenaya

As Mac walked into the vets, Mac saw a skunk.  "Get me out of here" he said.  - Kurt

Student of the Week - Toby

In Room 4 you really have to EARN Student of the Week.  This week it was very easy for Mrs May and Mrs O to choose our student of the week, as Toby has been going above and beyond to extend his learning in ALL curriculum areas.  Toby is always focused on his work and giving his best effort in everything.  What a superb role model you are to others Toby.
