Camp - Death Masks

After visiting the mummy and seeing her death mask we had the chance to make one of our own. We had to think about the design of our mask, and try to make it represent us.

Even the parents got to make one.

After tea we took part in a cool activity about the egyptian mummy. At the Otago museum they have a mummy who is over 2,000 years old. She is a very tiny woman who died in her thirties. It was pretty interesting to see what a mummy looks like and what they were buried in. Then we had an activity where they told us all bout the mummification process. The process used to take over a month because they would dry the body out by filling it with salt. They used to put sticks up a persons nose and scrambled the brains then pull the brains out through the nose. They would remove all of the organs and preserve them in a special jar. The only organ that would be left in the body would be the heart, because that was very important if you were to make it to the after-life. Danny was our corpse for the evening and we all got to help out turn him into a mummy. Check out our photos.

Camp - Eating

Tea was delicious!!!!! We got pizza from Pizza Hut. Everybody was super hungry and super happy with the menu.

Camp - Discovery World

After we had our Lotions and Potions session in the lab it was time for some investigative fun of our own. As the museum was nearly ready close we were able to go into Discovery World and check out everything on our own . It was really cool to have so much time to see all of the amazing things there were to see and do. We all love this free time!

Camp - Lotions & Potions

When we went to the museum we had some afternoon tea. Then we got to go into the lab to do some science experiments. We have been studying kitchen chemistry at school so it was really cool to have a session about 'Lotions and Potions'.

For one experiment we had to put acetone in a styrofoam cup to see what the reaction was. The cup melted away into a very cold goopy liquid in the bottom of the tray.

We made a neutral liquid using red cabbage in water. We put this water in long tubes and added a number of different ingredients to see what the reaction was. Acids turned the liquid pink and bases turned the water dark purple. It was lots of fun to see which was which.

Kate was our educator for the day and she showed us an experiment called elephant's toothpaste. She added warm water, food colouring, dish liquid and hydrogen peroxide to a bottle. Then she mixed dissolved yeast into warm water and combined the two mixtures. The reaction was a green frothy mixture bubbled up out of the bottle and down the sides.

We made gas in a jar by adding some ingredients to baking soda and water. We sealed them in a plastic bag. When the mixture got shaken up it began to react. The reactions was a gas that filled the plastic bag. It became very tight and eventually it popped.

We filled a beaker with water and a few drops of food colouring. Then we added some vegetable oil. The oil and water did not combine no matter how much we mixed them. Then we added dome detergent and mixed it in. The oil disappeared!!!

Camp - Sports Hall of Fame

After lunch we went to the sports hall fo fame. It is the only hall of fame in New Zealand and it is filled with amazing memorabilia of New Zealand's greatest sporting heros.

It is upstairs in the railway station.

We had a great time looking around.

Then we had a team competition to complete a quiz. We had to find the answers to 20 sporting questions. It was heaps of fun looking for the answers.

If you got stuck, John was always on hand with a clue or two to help you out.

The parents in each team were pretty helpful too.

Camp - Lunch at the Skatepark

We stopped for lunch behind the railway station. There was an awesome skatepark there so we all got our scooters out and had heaps of fun on the ramps and jumps. It was an awesome place to play in the autumn sun. Check out our smooth moves.
