Writing using electronic devices!!!!!

Check out the writing in Room 4 today.  Every student was working on the same document at the same time!  Most of us were using iPads, but some students were also working on computers in the classroom.  We have been learning to write a variety of different sentence types and today we were working on improving some basic sentences written about the snow earlier in the week.  Not only were we able to add our own suggestions to the Google Doc but we could get ideas from other students and give and receive feedback about what we were writing - collaboration at it's best!  Best of all for Mrs O, no books to cart home to mark!
"I didn't like how there was a whole lot people writing and sometimes your work got crossed out" - Toby.
"I didn't like it with everybody writing on the same page because it was easy to get mixed up with everybody elses" - Isla
"I liked how everybody's sentences were different" - Anna
"I liked getting inspiration from other people's sentences - not copying them but getting ideas" - Josie
"It was good how everybody had different colours so you could not write over the top of other people" - Lanie
"I like how I can see all of your work on one page and not have to carry a big stack of books home to mark!" - Mrs O

Here are some examples of our improved sentences....

Lunch-box fruit data

Today as part of our Statistics maths unit we gathered data on the fruit that Room 4 had in our lunchboxes.
We began by using tally marks to collate data for the number of pieces of fruit, then the types of fruit.
Later, we compared this information with our favourite types of fruit.  We made several different types of graph using the same data about our favourite fruits.

Strip graph

Pie graph

We found out that:
  • although the most common type of fruit that we are given for lunch is apples, only one student in our class chose apples as their favourite fruit.  Many of the students in Room 4 love strawberries but we realise that this is not the season for strawberries which is one of the reasons why we don't have them in our lunchboxes.
  • some students have no fruit on some days.
  • it is most common to have one piece of fruit in our lunch boxes
Will these graphs be the same tomorrow? Why/why not?

Friday 16th May
Once again we gathered data about the fruit in our lunchboxes.  Would our graph be the same as yesterday?  Here's what we discovered....

  • Today oranges were the most popular
  • Still nobody had a banana in their lunch box
  • Apples were the second most common fruit in Room 4's lunchbox.
  • Apples and oranges seem to be our most common fruit that our parents give us for lunch.

Student of the Week - Samara

Samara thoroughly enjoyed our latest inquiry unit, learning all about New Zealand's living taonga (treasures).  She would make a great conservationist as she knows lots about our special native creatures, why they are endangered and how we can help to protect them, including creating predator-free islands and stopping from destroying their natural habitats.  Way to go Samara!

Prediction strategy

For guided reading we are learning to use prediction as a useful strategy.  We are learning to use clues such as the title, illustrations, blurb, author and text type or what we have read so far to make predictions.  We are also learning to give reasons to justify our predictions.
Today for our reading activity we had to predict the headlines.  We had a sheet of newspaper headlines with a word missing.  We had to read each headline and predict the missing word.  We were then allowed to make a ‘silly word choice’.

Here are some of our sensible predictions:

  • Duke of Edinburgh to have meeting
  • Sheep farm planned for Wyndham
  • Another day, another tornado in city
  • Another day, another quake in city
  • Another day, another night in city
  • Children on car roof  a concern for mum
  • Children on TV screen a concern for mum
  • Fog all-but closes school
  • 10 year old boy seriously wounded in hand while clothes shopping in Central Otago
  • 10 year old boy seriously wounded in hand while lighting fires in Central Otago
  • 10 year old boy seriously wounded in hand while hammering nails in Central Otago
  • Graffiti scribbled on London wall
  • Spectators will be gobsmacked by Henry Tuatara
  • Fears held for missing Queen

The 'real' headlines
And some of our 'silly' ones...

  • Snails race starts in top conditions
  • Duke of Edinburgh to have lollies
  • Duke of Edinburgh to have baby
  • People farm planned for Wyndham
  • Port-a-loo farm planned for Wyndham
  • Fairy farm planned for Wyndham
  • Elephant race starts in top conditions
  • Fears held for missing ant
  • Fears held for missing grass
  • Fears held for missing lollies
  • Another day, another rhino in city
  • Flies at risk crossing road
  • Graffiti scribbled on cat's back
  • 10 year old boy seriously wounded in hand while mall shopping in Central Otago
