Prediction strategy

For guided reading we are learning to use prediction as a useful strategy.  We are learning to use clues such as the title, illustrations, blurb, author and text type or what we have read so far to make predictions.  We are also learning to give reasons to justify our predictions.
Today for our reading activity we had to predict the headlines.  We had a sheet of newspaper headlines with a word missing.  We had to read each headline and predict the missing word.  We were then allowed to make a ‘silly word choice’.

Here are some of our sensible predictions:

  • Duke of Edinburgh to have meeting
  • Sheep farm planned for Wyndham
  • Another day, another tornado in city
  • Another day, another quake in city
  • Another day, another night in city
  • Children on car roof  a concern for mum
  • Children on TV screen a concern for mum
  • Fog all-but closes school
  • 10 year old boy seriously wounded in hand while clothes shopping in Central Otago
  • 10 year old boy seriously wounded in hand while lighting fires in Central Otago
  • 10 year old boy seriously wounded in hand while hammering nails in Central Otago
  • Graffiti scribbled on London wall
  • Spectators will be gobsmacked by Henry Tuatara
  • Fears held for missing Queen

The 'real' headlines
And some of our 'silly' ones...

  • Snails race starts in top conditions
  • Duke of Edinburgh to have lollies
  • Duke of Edinburgh to have baby
  • People farm planned for Wyndham
  • Port-a-loo farm planned for Wyndham
  • Fairy farm planned for Wyndham
  • Elephant race starts in top conditions
  • Fears held for missing ant
  • Fears held for missing grass
  • Fears held for missing lollies
  • Another day, another rhino in city
  • Flies at risk crossing road
  • Graffiti scribbled on cat's back
  • 10 year old boy seriously wounded in hand while mall shopping in Central Otago
