Student of the week - Samara

What a terrific start to the term Samara has had.  Both Mrs May and Mrs O have noticed the effort that she has been putting in to all of her learning.  Samara also produced a superb holidays project with lots of interesting items stuck onto her poster, including bullets and 3D glasses!  Congratulations on being Room 4's Student of the Week Samara and keep up the fantastic work.

Skateboarder wipes out - Quick Write

Today before we began our Quick Writes we discussed the different purposes for writing, some of which were to:
ENTERTAIN
REPORT
EXPLAIN
PERSUADE
REPORT
NARRATE
DESCRIBE

Room 4 students then tried to choose a new way to respond to our quick write picture.  We had a really impressive variety of responses - television reporters, newspaper reporters, diary writer, an explanation, poems, descriptions....
Hits a rock, goes into the sky like a rocket launcher .Here comes a car at full speed ahead, smack!!! He rolls out of the way. But he may have a fractured hip and a split head and a split eye lid from the rock that he hit. The skateboard broke the glass of the car. He’s lucky to be alive - NOT REALLY.   - Blake

Skate, skate round the racing track.
Skate, skate round and round.
Flipping, tricking, flicking at the park.
Riding, riding, riding through the rain and wet.
Skateboarding  - Max

Dear Diary,
Today I saw the most wickedest thing ever. I was walking down Baldwin Street then out of nowhere a skateboarder came zooming down the steep hill.  He fell off then........Something happened ….............  - Rubie

Once upon a time a boy was riding his skateboard along the road. A big bunch of lions and tigers were zooming down the road. He jumped of his skateboard. He kept running and running. On Friday morning a 17 year old boy was speeding along Clyde Street in Balclutha on a skateboard. Then around the corner came Mrs Alexander May, she was going over the speed limit so she never had any time to slow down and stop. Then she flattened the poor boy. Three days later Mrs Alexander May still remains in police custody for killing the 17 year old boy.   Reported by Kate Jopp

On Monday  22 of May a 20 year old boy came zooming down Baldwin street on his skateboard and has  bad brain damage and broke  his left arm.  But no one had seen until a rima  year old boy was playing outside and saw him lying on the ground knocked out.  So the little boy ran inside yelling “MUM, MUM someone is lying on the road dead.”  - Lucie

An old man was skating down Baldwin street and he hit a pebble and went flying over his skateboard and KABOOM!!!  He hit the tarseal with a boom.  He broke his right arm, leg and ribs and to make things worse he got run over. “He is lucky to be alive” said the doctor. - Hamish

A twelve year old boy was skateboarding in the middle of the road. Toot toot.  I look out the kitchen window.  A car came racing and only just saw him and quickly went round . Then the twelve year old boy saw a lost dog walking down the street and forget what he was doing.   His skateboard flung up behind him and he fell off and broke his arm.    - Alyssa

You should always wear a helmet  knee pad elbow pads. So you don’t end up in hospital. If you go on a road always cheek the road and then you can go. But if a car is coming stay on the footpath.    - Ryan

Push, push, skate, skate
Through the windy road
Here comes a car, toot, toot
Off the skateboard you go
The car ran over his leg
Now it’s a fried egg
What a tired day.   - Connie

The skateboarders name is Dan and he is 18 and here he is.” “ Don’t look at me - I am in pain, go away, away, away.”
“ Thats enough of the report thanks now.” - Jessica

I saw a person on a skateboard.  He was going down the road on Baldwin Street.  He couldn’t stop and there was car coming.  What should he do? He bounced off  the skateboard. He jumped up and said “I am fine but I have a sore leg so take me to Dunedin hospital.  Unfortunately he had a leg broken but it was all ok. - Jenaya

Student of the week - Toby

So who is Eric Liddell?  What is he famous for?  Why would Toby like to meet Eric?
To find out the answers to these questions you will need to come along and listen to Room 4's speeches next term.
Toby has written a FANTASTIC speech about Eric Liddell, which we can't wait to hear him deliver.

Remember Room 4 students to practise your speech lots and lots over the holidays!!!!

Wild things paper collage

After completing a flat paper collage earlier in the term, our next challenge was to create a paper collage by experimenting with a variety of ways to manipulate the paper.  Last week we had an experimenting time where we tried lots of different techniques e.g. cutting, tearing, fanning, spiralling, fanning, screwing...  We then had to apply these techniques to try to create a collage with lots of 3-dimensional aspects.

Our inspiration for today's art work came from the story 'Where the Wild Things are' by Maurice Sendak. Room 4 then had the challenge of creating their own unique Wild Thing, using as many different paper techniques as possible.

Crikey - what a mess!!!!

Learning to tell the time

In Room 4 we are learning to tell the time using an analogue clock or watch. Many of us are very used to reading digital watches and clocks, so we need a lot of extra practise to read a clock face.
One idea that we have found useful is to get a cheap clock (this white was $10 at the Warehouse) and use a vivid to write 'time language' around the outside so the students can practise telling the time at home.
Parents can then ask the time and the students can use the words around the clock to help them read the time accurately.
Another great idea is to use the clock for students to monitor when they are allowed to do something at home e.g. You can turn the T.V on at half past five.  In doing so, the children get used to USING the clock and seeing the relevance to their everyday lives.
It is also useful to hang this clock at a height that is easy for the students to read, preferably at the same height as their eyes.

Basketball with Mitch

Mitch, the sports activator, and his helper Nicole were at school today working with Room 4 on basketball skills.  It was amazing just how many skills we packed into 35 minutes!

Here we are working hard at keeping our eyes UP so that we can see others around us rather than eyes on the ball.

This time we had to get as low as we possibly could while still dribbling the ball.

Time for the ball to be passed between and around our legs...

.... then behind our backs!

Mitch held up coloured discs and we had to keep dribbling our own ball while watching andcalling out the colours of the discs that were being held up.  It was quite a challenge for some.

Individual skills

The trickiest challenge of all was to dribble two basketballs at the same time!!!!First we had to dribble them in time, and then out of time so it sounded like a machine gun.

Game time!  Blake proved too much of a champ winning all three games of 'King of the court'where you had to dribble your own ball while knocking others out of the play area.

We finished off our session by shooting some baskets.  Lots of fun and great physical activity.

Student of the week - Lanie

We love the enthusiasm that Lanie brings to the classroom.  It is so refreshing to see a student that is hungry for learning and keen to improve.  Lanie definitely deserves to be Room 4's student of the week for her positive attitude, particularly towards reading and numeracy.
Tino pai rawa Lanie.  We are very proud of you.

Fonterra Milk For Schools

We are lucky enough to be part of the 'Fonterra Milk For Schools' programme where each Y1-6 student is given a carton of milk daily to drink.  Thankfully it is not like the olden days where kids had to drink warm milk - ours is stored in a fridge outside Room 6!  After morning tea the class messengers go and collect Room 4's milk and we have from 11am-12.30pm to drink our milk.  The only rule is that it has to stay on our desks.  This is so that nobody gets their milk cartons mixed up.
Some people like to drink theirs all at once, while others drink some during reading and some during writing.  After we are finished we have to follow the instructions carefully to fold the carton up for recycling.  It is VERY important to make sure that there is no milk left in the carton (as we have discovered!).  It makes a bit of a mess on our desks otherwise.

The last step is to put it into the blue recycling bin outside Room 1 when we go for lunch.
It has been great to see students enthusiastic about the milk and also those who were a little bit hesitant, persevering and trying to finish their milk each day.
What healthy kids we are in Room 4!
