Haiku poetry

As part of our poetry writing unit, we learnt about the structure of haiku poems.  We found out that they are a japanese form of poetry, usually about nature, that follows the format of:

Line 1 = 5 syllables
Line 2 = 7 syllables
Line 3 = 5 syllables

Here are our favourites that we wrote today...

Seashell                                                          Bees
Lots of collecting                                           Yellow and black stripes
Pink, blue, purple on paua                           Makes yummy honey in hives
Seashells can be white                                  Has painful stings, OUCH!

Bulf calf                                                         Rainbow
Dangerous to kids                                         Comes after rain drops
They grow really fat and big                        Colours float across the sky
They go to the works                                     Need some sun again

Kowhai                                                           Winter
Yellow flowers bloom                                    Ice hanging from trees
Only found in New Zealand                          Skifields open in winter
Kowhai is the best                                          Schools are closed for snow

Stag                                                                 Horse
Stags have velvet skin                                   Horses like to eat
Hunters shoot them with their guns            We like to read them
Really good to eat                                          Horses galloping

Twinkling all night long                                Hot flash in the sky
As bright as the moon and sun                     Usually in huge storms
Watch them glow all night                            Can destroy houses

16,000 pounds per bite                                   Clouds are as soft as pillows
Known to kill humans                                    Clouds float across skies

Stars glow in the sky                                       Saint Bernards are huge
Up in the sky there are stars                          They always eat lots of meat
Twinkle in the night                                        Brown, black, white they are

Appears after rain
Funky stripes form in the sky
Find the pot of gold
