Black and white paintings

Today we finally finished off our paintings of Antarctica scences.  We had the challenge of only being allowed to use black and white paint, so we really had to use our artistic skills to mix colours and create different tones and shades of grey.  Some of us found this tricky, especially when we wanted to paint something colourful e.g. an orange beak for a penguin!  We did look at black and white photos for inspiration and took notice of how different tones and shades were represented.

Some of us become really good at mixing colours on the palette or on the newspaper or even on our paper as we painted.  We had no water, so used cloths to wipe our brushes when we wanted a different colour on our brushes or sponges.  This seemed to work well and stopped the water splashes that sometimes happen on our art work.
